In Brief

Pregnancy crisis centre openes

If you are faced with an unplanned pregnancy or the result of an ultrasound test and need practical help, advice or just a chat, then there is now a place in Norwich which can offer no-strings attached assistance. The Norwich Pregnancy Crisis Centre, at Fishergate near the city centre, is staffed by a well trained team of volunteers. It offers a range of support services including confidential counselling, free pregnancy testing, practical help with baby equipment, accommodation and befrienders. Also available is information on adoption, counselling following stillbirth or abortion and information about other local and national helping agencies. The centre is open to girls and women of any age and also to their partners and families who can also be affected by pregnancy crises. Director, Susan Lee, said: "Our counsellors come from different churches across Norfolk but they all share a desire to offer hope to those in crisis". Dr John Pilling, chairman of the executive, added: "There are now over 130 pregnancy crisis centres affiliated to Care for Life (part of CARE - Christian Action Research and Education). These national links have been very helpful as we have been able to learn from other centres with over ten years experience in this field. "They are currently helping us to develop educational presentations to schools and colleges. We hope that this will help to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions in the longer term." Should you need any further information or details of the centre, please ring 01603 768777 or contact Norwich Pregnancy Crisis Centre, c/o The Fishergate Centre, Fishergate, Norwich NR3 1SE.

Support and help available

The annual Feed The Minds (FTM) Christian book fair is being held once again at St Gregory's Church, Norwich from Wednesday July 7 to midday on Saturday July 10. Last year's event raised £3500 and organisers hope to beat that this year. Donations of books are most welcome and they can be collected from you and stored centrally. Helpers are also needed to unpack the books and sort them out on July 5 and 6. If you can help or would like to have donated books collected then phone 01603 454799. FTM is a national charity whose mission is to support Christian literature and communication projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. It works with overseas churches in production and distribution of Christian literature, literacy and development work and theological education.
