Yellow bus will target villages

A bright yellow bus will take to the rural byways this spring to give youngsters a new route to learning and leisure. Norwich Youth for Christ is the driving force behind the venture which was launched on March 5. The charity's double-decker bus - Yellow Submarine - is touring rural communities, offering "hands on" facilities geared to today's teenagers. The re-fitted bus will include video and computer games, drop-in and advice centre, internet access, refreshments and job skills club where youngsters receive help with interview know-how and compiling CVs. Yellow Submarine - funded by Trust donations - is tailored to bridge the gap felt by the lack of rural resources. "We hope to give the bus back to the county's young, village people who would normally be unable to access many of these facilities," explains bus co-ordinator, Jon Horrox. "I would like the bus to be used five nights a week but we do need regular volunteers and extra drivers," contines Jon, who hopes the bus can be manned with local church support. Future plans for the Yellow Submarine include: basketball, football and a climbing wall on the outside of the bus. Visits to youth clubs and schools are also envisaged. The scheme will be an out-working of NYFC's faith. "It is important to earn the right to tell people about what we believe. The project will enable us to get alongside youngsters and build relationships," says Jon.
